What exactly is a ceilidh?

Ceilidh comes from the Gaelic word for ‘gathering’ or ‘party’ and it has a rich cultural history dating back to the 19th century. Traditionally, communities across the Scottish Highlands would come together for celebrations filled with entertainment like music, dancing and storytelling. Many dance styles and steps have evolved through the ceilidh tradition, accompanied by live music played on instruments like fiddle and accordion.

Our visiting band, The Heist, offer a unique twist on the ceilidh experience, taking inspiration from Scottish, Irish, English and Klezmer music. You can expect the old classics, some newer dances and a healthy dose of choreographed chaos.

Do I need to bring a dance partner?

In short, no! Sometimes you will be dancing in a pair, that pairing may change during a dance, and sometimes you’re in a bigger group, but we encourage anyone who fancies it to come and give it a go.

The Springful Ceilidh will be led by a ‘caller’, who talks you through the moves for each dance. These dances are easy to follow – no experience is required, just enthusiasm!

Inclusivity and diversity

Our dances are all Inclusive, regardless of age, gender, ability, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

All Hallows’ is wheelchair accessible.
